Redbirds rally to stun Hurricanes

CHASKA — Yogi Berra’s immortal musing “It ain’t over, ’til it’s over,”

had to occur to Dave Johnson and his Fergus Falls Hurricanes Sunday afternoon.

The Isanti Redbirds erased a 2-0 Fergus Falls lead with a four-run eighth to hand the Hurricanes a 4-2 loss in the Class C state tournament.

The Hurricanes, who are now 23-10, will face Cold Spring Friday in a loser’s bracket game at Shakopee.

Mike Gaustad gave the Hurricanes a 1-0 lead in the first when he singled, stole second, went to third on a trounder and scored on a grounder by Tim Erickson.

Dusty Christenson gave the Hurricanes a 2-0 lead in the fifth when he reached second on a throwing error and scored on another error that allowed Gaustad to reach second.

Tyler Gagner started for the Hurricanes and threw shutout ball for the first seven frames.

Pat Lind laced a one-out single to start Isanti’s comeback. B.J. Samuelson walked and after Adam Johnson replaced Gagner, tyler Schaff singled to load the bases. Kyle Johnson followed with a two-run double to tie the game. Brett Burman singled in two more for the victory.

Reliever Adam West notched the victory.

Lind had three safeties for Isanti. Gaustad and Brimhall both collected two hits in the loss.
