Girls notch first career win against Sartell
Otters defeat Sabres in 1-0 road match

SARTELL — Members of Fergus Falls’ girls soccer team had never beaten the state-ranked Sartell Sabres in their soccer careers.
That is, until Tuesday.
The Otters travelled to Sartell and left witha 1-0 victory, their first over the Sabres since the 2001 season.
“All those girls were pumped. They had never beaten Sartell before,” said Otter Coach Karoline Brause.
For Fergus Falls, that elusive victory came after a hard-fought battle.
After a scoreless first period Fergus Falls’ forwards connected for the game’s lone goal with 9:10 remaining in the game.
Katlyn Swedberg conn-ected with Kaitlyn McClaflin who was wide open in front of the net. McClaflin was one-on-one with the Sartell goalie and put the ball in the back of the net for the winning goal.
“The possession by our team was absolutely amazing,” Brause said. “The girls did a good job moving the ball and finding people at the point of attack,” Brause said.
The result — 10 shots on goal for the Otters.
“The Sartell denfense was everywhere and the girls did a good job of handling it,” Brause said.
The Fergus Falls defense was called upon for a strong showing and held the state-ranked Sabres scoreless.
“Our defensive team of Karlee Kosak, Jaclyn Ellingson, Hannah Rausch and Jen Swenson did an amazing job of getting in the way of everything Sartell tried to do,” Brause said.
The game was the Otters’ season opener in Central Lakes Confererence play. The victory gives the girls a 1-0 record in conference play and 2-0 overall after defeating Hillcrest 3-0 in its season opener last Thursday.
The Otters host St. Cloud Tech Thursday at 7 p.m. The game is parent night.
