FERGUS FALLS — They say there’s no placelike home.

That was the case Tuesday as the Fergus Falls boys soccer team broke loose in a 5-0 conference opening victory over Sartell at the middle school field.

A frustrated Fergus Falls squad watched many scoring opportunities pass by in the first period before Tyler Hatfield beat Sartell’s goalie with a high shot off a corner kick. On the play, Fergus Falls’ David Sanderson received a corner kick from Trevor Gervais who sent a pass into the goal box where Hatfield connected for the goal.

The goal put Fergus Falls up 1-0 at halftime.

The Otters had five or six great scoring opportunities but were only able to convert on the one goal, said Fergus Falls soccer coach Lowell Carpenter.

The Otters entered the second half looking to expand their lead. The 1-0 lead was quickly expanded in the second half when Sanderson volleyed in a long throw-in from Simon Erlandson at the ten minute mark for a 2-0 lead. Joe Anderson then headed in a corner kick from Gervais to make the score 3-0.

The Otters went up 4-0 when Eric Johnson scored on a pass from Daniel Ronnevik.

Hatfield finished the scoring when he won a ball in the box after a corner kick and beat the Sartell goalie.

The Otters recorded 12 corner kicks to Sartell’s two, a key indicator of the team effort, Carpenter said.

The game was a big milestone for Fergus Falls goalkeeper Noah Heidorn who recorded his first shutout and made several key saves to preserve the shutout.

“This was a great team effort with several players stepping up their play,” said Carpenter. “This resulted in a huge advantage in possession time which paid off in the second half with four goals”.

Jordan Tommerdahl and Jacob Hexum and Junior Eric Johnson played very well pressuring and advancing the ball from their outside midfield and forward positions, Carpenter said.

The Otters travel to St. Cloud Thursday for a 7 p.m. match against Tech.
