Pelican bus ridership needs a boost
Published Tuesday, December 9, 2008
Bus service in Pelican Rapids, part of the Otter Express system, needs more passengers if the service is to continue in 2010.
“We’ve had very little ridership in Pelican Rapids, and we’re trying to come up with some strategies for 2009 to boost the usage of our buses,” said Steve Skauge of Productive Alternatives which oversees operations of the Otter Express in Otter Tail County. “We’re willing to adjust hours and make available service for people for whatever times would get the most usage.”
Pelican Rapids city officials also are doing all they can to make the system work.
City Administrator Don Solga and city clerk-treasurer Glenys Ehlert have met with Kim Embretson of the West Central Initiative about community concerns regarding bus and public transportation. The city had previously changed a format from bus funding from the State of Minnesota to go in on the regional program (Otter Express/Transit Alternatives) for Otter Tail County.
Embretson has a blog promoting “Bike, walk or bus to work or school.”
Ehlert said there are some interesting themes on the blog about riding the bus, a better option during the winter months than biking or walking. Pelican Rapids is working on a walking and biking path along both sides of the Pelican River.
Skauge, Solga, Ehlert and others are working with others to come up with ideas for increasing ridership in Pelican Rapids.
