State Sen. Dan Skogen, Hewitt, was selected as the 2008 Dairy Legislator of the Year by the Minnesota Milk Producers Association. The award was announced during Minnesota Milk’s annual awards banquet held during the Midwest Dairy Expo in St. Cloud.

“Sen. Skogen has earned the respect of dairy producers by listening to our needs and understanding the value we add to our state’s economy, environment and rural communities,” said Pat Lunemann, president of the Minnesota Milk Producers Association and dairy producer from Clarissa. “He’s a rising star in our state legislature, earning the respect of his colleagues in the Senate and as a member of the agriculture committee.”

The award is presented annually by the Minnesota Milk Producers Association to a legislator who demonstrates support for dairy producers, the dairy industry and rural Minnesota by actions taken at the State Capitol in St. Paul.

“I’m deeply honored to receive this award,” said Skogen this morning. “The dairy industry is a big part of economic development in our area of west central Minnesota.”

Skogen, first elected to the State Senate in 2006, represents portions of Otter Tail, Wadena and Becker counties.

As a freshman senator, Skogen was the chief author of the Livestock Investment Grant Program and successfully ushered the bill to its final passage.

“This grant program does much, in partnership with private investments from area farmers, in maintaining agriculture in District 10,” Skogen said.

The lawmaker from Hewitt is vice chairman of the environment and natural resources committee and also serves as a member of committees working with agriculture, veterans affairs, early childhood to grade 12 education and commerce and consumer protection.

Skogen holds an Audio Communications Degree from Thief River Falls Technical College and is a radio broadcaster in Wadena.

The Minnesota Milk Producers Association is the voice of Minnesota’s dairy industry and serves as the grassroots organization for dairy producers. Its mission is to promote a positive image for the dairy industry while protecting dairy producers’ business interests and way of life.
