Authorities search for knife-wielding suspect

Published Friday, February 1, 2008

A photo line-up could reveal the identity of the knife-wielding suspect in a Perham home invasion last Friday.

“We have two possible suspects,” Police Chief Brian Nelson said. “We’re going to have the victim come in and look at pictures, we hope yet this week.”

A woman, home alone, got up around 4 a.m. to put her dogs in an outdoor kennel. She went back inside and went to the basement to start the woodstove. When she went to the main floor of the house, she found a man with a knife standing in her kitchen. She told Perham Police she screamed at the man to get out and asked what he wanted. The suspect then allegedly started waving a knife at the woman, saying, “Come here.” At that point, she grabbed the phone and called 911, Nelson said.

The suspect came at her again, waving the knife and demanding that she come to him. She told law enforcement she dropped the phone and ran upstairs . As the suspect tried to run after her, he fell down the basement stairs, went back to the main floor of the house and ran out. The woman saw him run between her garage and driveway.

“She said the door was locked all night until she opened it to let the dogs out,” Nelson said.

When the Perham Police officer arrived on scene, he dispatched three Otter Tail County Sheriff’s Deputies, including the K-9 unit, to assist in searching a four-block area. The suspect’s scent was traced to just west of the Primera Egg plant, then lost.

“We talked to the employees inside and none of them saw anyone matching the description in the plant,” Nelson said.

A truck driver in the Primera vicinity said he saw a man matching the description leaving the area shortly before deputies arrived.

The suspect is described as a white male between the age of 17 and 25 with brown hair; 5-feet, 6 inches to 5 feet 8 inches tall with small, round wire-rim glasses. He was wearing a red three-quarter-lengths winter coat and a gray stocking cap with a dark band across the front.

The incident is being “aggressively investigated,” Nelson said.

While not a common occurrence, “No town is immune from this,” Nelson said. “But we’re trying to keep this an isolated incident.”

Maybe if she was armed she could have shot the intruder so we wouldn't have to find him before he tries it again, and again, ...

This is a serious matter. I bet you wouldn't be so sarcastic about the whole thing if this man was standing in your mother's or sister's kitchen waving a knife around. Be a little more proactive with your comments.

From your comments, I am assuming that you were never in Larry's, Ballzdeep, and would have no clue of the social status or IQ of their customers.
I am wondering how a business that closed over a month ago is still being brought up in these postings.
It must have been a great establishment!

If this person is mentally disabled do they still deserve the death penalty. Does violence alway bring on more violence? We all want to feel safe. If my mother or sister were in that situation i would hope they would run instead of confront this person, I mean duh! their obviously dangerouse.

I don't care if it's the pope or the president that you want to call names, or customers at a bar... it's just not the right word to use anytime.
Very offensive, and thank you for correcting that.

treehugger... what??

Ballzdeep - you are hysterical... I'm thinking that there are a few people that need to unbunch their undies.

Shocking they lost the scent at the EGG PLANT.
The perp is 5'6 and has round wire rim glasses? Check the chess club or his mom's basement.

If someone is waving a a knife at me in my house and I am within reach of any of the guns in my house--the guys is going get be well ventilated when he leaves. Tree hugger I hope you can run fast to get away for your intruder, but my intruder will know not to bring a knife to a gun fight next time. I am sorry if that sounds "violent" but at some point you have to even out the playing field and defend yourself.

Or maybe it was Harry Potter and he magically disaparated at the egg plant. :-O

This story is grim.
But as usual, comment land is more interesting. To get irate at someone who goes by the moniker Mr. Deep is posting under, it seems asinine to get worked up about anything he says.

Humor aside, I agree with BobWilliams. This is a serious crime and it is sad someone like this would terrorize a small town like Perham. I pray the law enforcement officials involved catch this coward and justice is served. And right soon.

More than likely he will get a slap on the hand. Unless this man was on drugs or gets caught with drugs. Sad but very true around here.

Bizarre....you wouldn't expect something like this in Perham. My guess is METH. GROSS METH!

all jokes aside i think this is what people fear most- home invasion - a place that should be safe becoming unsafe. I think that "to even out" the playing field with violence isnt a viable solution. The eye for an eye scenario is playing out in some parts of inner cities in the U.S and the middle east and those places dont seem safer because of it. i dont want to live in fear and think the worst of people. you can pry my hacky sack out of my cold dead hand!

I am not saying that I will take an eye for an eye, but what I AM saying is that I will do whatever I have to do to protect my family. You see I have three children and I cant really run that fast to get away when I am carrying them. I dont want to think the worst of people either, but I am not going to be naive and think that there are no sick people out there that haven't a conscience or any morals. If someone was threatening to gravely harm your children, you can honestly say that you would not use deadly force to protect them if you had that option? I would, in an instant & without a second thought or hesitation.
