Program reviews importance of Vitamin D for body
Published Saturday, February 9, 2008

The Y's Folk members will certainly want to attend the association's noon potluck and business meeting on Feb. 18.
Our newly elected President Elect/Program Chairman, Larry Zenner, has secured a very interesting and beneficial program for us older folks. Dr. Carl O'Neal Page Jr. MD, will be telling us about some exciting new aspects of the Vitamin D which he learned about from a British discovery recorded in a recent medical journal.
It seems the Vitamin D level in most of us runs quite low and that condition can contribute to a varity of health problems. Have you had your Vitamin "D" level checked lately? Come and learn.
Dr. Page joined the FF Medical Group P.A. in 1974, and practiced internal medicine for 24 years. You perhaps know Dr. Page best of late as a highly-praised violinist. He is a Southerner being raised in Spartanburg, S.C. He and wife, Barb, have two grown boys, Mike and Eric.
My wife, Audrey, and I got away last week to visit my older brother who has been rehab recovering in a nursing home in St. Peter. That is a new nursing home built along side the new hospital, structured in the POD system catering to different resident needs.
Hopefully he will return home soon to his wife where they live in the same type of co-op as the Village Cooperative her in Fergus Falls, which is managed by the same people. We had in mind to visit five other people plus our son, Todd and wife, Jill, in Plymouth, and we were successful on each. We saw Carole Gealow in Mankato, Ruthie Matchinsky in Elk River (our previous roof neighbor), Gary and Marijo Hickok in Rosewille, all previous Fergus Falls people, and then another couple we knew when we lived in Ortonville dating back to 1970, who live in Plymouth.
A very good run, I say, and son Todd helped us purchase a new Laptop and printer before we came home on Sunday. What a week — we missed all the snow but it was so very cold on Tuesday when we visited our granddaughter at St. Bens in St. Jo.
The YMCA is making good use of the swimming pool with children's swim lessons now in progress. Just call Heidi at the Y. New this year is adult synchronized swimming, being coached by — yes you know her — Inga Nelson. If you can tread water, get involved.
Celebrate Valentines Day on the 14 with soup from the Viking and bread from Falls Bakery — 11:30 a.m to 1 p.m. at the Y.
The Y is a place to work out — in the water, with a personal trainer on machines or in one of the classes — Yoga, Pilates, Body Blast, Body Circuit, Absolute Abs, Silver Sneakers or Kickboxing — take your pick. The kids can enjoy an Easter egg Hunt on Sunday the 16, and for some of us the Battle of the Bulge starts in March when you weigh in to get started.
Finances are always important and right now the Cliff and Doris Maxwell annual giving campaign is in progress with a goal of $60,000. You may be contacted for a pledge.
We do have a member round up going on for new and previous members of the Y.
If a present member brings in a new member or previous member they will receive a bounty toward their membership dues. Ask, it may work.
We stay busy at home and at the Y. Remember we play cards on Monday afternoons in the conference room.

The Daily Journal is happy to host community conversations about news and life in Fergus Falls and the surrounding area. As hosts, we expect guests will show respect for each other. That means we don't threaten or defame each other, and we keep conversations free of personal attacks. Witty is great. Abusive is not. If you think a post violates these standards, don't escalate the situation. Instead, flag the comment to alert us. We'll take action if necessary. It's not hard. This should be a place where people want to read and contribute -- a place for spirited exchanges of opinion. So those who persist with racist, defamatory or abusive postings risk losing the privilege to post at all.Post a comment
