Adopt-a-class joins seniors

We're starting out next week with another holiday. Monday we celebrate Presidents' Day. The Senior Center office will be closed but a noon meal featuring pork chops will be served.

On Tuesday, we welcome a visit from our Adopt-a-Class, Lynette Ringquist's third graders from Cleveland School. In the spirit of the month, there will be a Valentine exchange and games beginning at 12:45 p.m.

We also look forward to entertainment by the students' own "Kitchen Band," inspired by the Senior Citizens Kitchen Band that visited the shool in January. Be sure to sign up in the office if you plan to participate in this intergenerational activity on the 19th.

Thursday, we celebrate birthdays of our members born in February. Short month, fewer birthdays this month — only 26. But please join us to help them celebrate. Make a reservation in advance and enjoy the roast beef noon meal too.

Community Education is offering the four-hour Driver Improvement Refresher class on Friday from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. at the public library. Register and pay the $18 fee in the Community Ed office.

For additional information, call 998-0544, Ext. 1600. Since this is the Refresher class, you must previously have completed the full eight-hour class.

Next week on the 27th, Attorney Jay Cichosz will again be at the Senior Center. If you have legal questions and wish a free consultation, make an appointment in advance by calling 736-6842.

Cell phones seem to come and go and often when you get a new one — what do you do with the old one? The National Council on Aging is sponsoring a collection of the old ones. Depending on make and model, an old cell phone may be worth up to $30 and help to provide meals on wheels, caregiving support, health promotional activities and life-long learning.

The Senior Center is participating in this Cellular Recycler program and has a collection box in the office. "Cellular Recycler's mission is to create a widespread program to collect and resell valuable used cellular equipment while keeping the rest out of our nation's landfills."

The Daily Journal is happy to host community conversations about news and life in Fergus Falls and the surrounding area. As hosts, we expect guests will show respect for each other. That means we don't threaten or defame each other, and we keep conversations free of personal attacks. Witty is great. Abusive is not. If you think a post violates these standards, don't escalate the situation. Instead, flag the comment to alert us. We'll take action if necessary. It's not hard. This should be a place where people want to read and contribute -- a place for spirited exchanges of opinion. So those who persist with racist, defamatory or abusive postings risk losing the privilege to post at all.
