One month has passed since the new ELEAH Auxiliary opened its Bargain Bazaar Thrift Store on the east side of main street in downtown Elbow Lake. Money from the sale of donated clothing and other items will be used to fund projects that the hospital auxiliary deems necessary.

“It’s amazing where we’re at today when you consider that we, as an auxiliary, reorganized in October 2007,” said Janet Johnson, auxiliary secretary. “Our auxiliary includes 150 members from all parts of Grant County.”

In addition to clothing, other items for sale at the new thrift store include kitchen wares, giftwares, some antiques and items available in the library and boutique. Hours at Bargain Bazaar Thrift Store are 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays.

“Many volunteers put in a lot of hours from October through January in order to get things ready at our new thrift store,” Johnson said. “It took 600 hours of volunteer service in order for us to get ready for the store opening in mid-January.”

Elbow Lake Lions Club members donated shelves and its members put in many volunteer hours at Bargain Bazaar Thrift Store, as did many other individuals. WalMart donated clothing racks and also made a financial gift.

Some of the first funds raised through sales at the thrift store will be used for a March auxiliary program called “No One Dies Alone.” Mentors will train people in assisting people in their final stages of life. This program complements Hospice but does not take the place of Hospice.”

“Even holding hands means a lot when being in the room with a dying person,” auxiliary historian Carolyn Horst said. “No One Dies Alone volunteers do much in helping both family members, Hospice workers and other professionals.”

Marilyn Pattison, auxiliary vice president, said all auxiliary members who work at Bargain Bazaar Thrift Store find their work fulfilling.

“We know that money raised will go to good causes that benefit our hospital,” she said.

“Down the road we have plans to purchase equipment for the hospital and organize other fundraising events.”

ELEAH Medical Center serves all of Grant County — including Elbow Lake, Evansville, Ashby and Hoffman — as well as Morris in Stevens County.
