Afternoon coffee time is a delight for Jeanne and Lewis Vik who reside at the Good Samaritan complex in Battle Lake. In back is Housing Manager Linda Nine.
Each afternoon the coffee lounge at the Good Samaritan skilled nursing home in Battle Lake is filled with good cheer. Attendees include residents of not only the skilled nursing home but also those who reside in the new housing with services facility.
One couple, Jeanne and Lewis Vik, enjoy coffee together while representing both housing areas. Jeanne lives in the housing with services facility while Lewis lives in the Good Sam skilled nursing home.
“Yes, this is a fun place to enjoy coffee each afternoon,” Jeanne said. “It’s a good time for residents and family members to come together. Good Sam staff members also are like family to us.”
The skilled nursing home cares for 55 residents and about 32 reside at the new housing with services facility that opened last year.
“Our new facility is designed to house people 55 and older who can live independently but who may require some minimal assistance,” Housing Manager Linda Nine said.
The new unit is connected to the skilled nursing home on the west side of West Battle Lake. Good Samaritan Nursing Home Administrator Jim Wolf said the new housing with services facility is a hybrid building.
One license allows registration as a HWS (housing with services) and a second license, Class F, allows for assisted home care related to activities of daily living such as eating and bathing. The three-story addition allows for both independence and personal assistance for those who need it.
The new housing with services facility connected to the Good Samaritan nursing home includes 19 two-bedroom units and nine one-bedroom units.
The new unit includes vehicle parking in an underground heating parking garage, elevator access, a library with what Nine describes as “a stunning view of West Battle Lake,” activities room and central dining room.
“Our new addition is staffed 24 hours a day,” Nine said. “What assistance people need varies, but help is provided for what we refer to as aging in place services — meal preparation, transportation, medication management, bathing, hygiene assistance and other services.”
Area residents are encouraged to come and make use of the satellite connection in the activities room. Professionals who assist renters in the new housing
