We have another holiday coming up next Monday. The Senior Center office will be closed for Martin Luther King Day, however, there will be a noon meal served, featuring chicken strips.
Attorney Jay Cichosz will be with us on Wednesday, the 23rd, starting at 1 p.m. Consultations are free but an appointment is necessary so if you have not yet made one, please call 736-6842 to find out if time is available.
On Thursday, Mary Jane Hay from the Land of the Dancing Sky Area Agency on Aging will be at the Center to take you on a web site tour of the Internet. If you haven't gone "surfing" with Mary Jane, this is your opportunity to get better acquainted with your computer and have fun at the same time. No cost but call the Senior office to register.
And it’s birthday party time also on the 24th. Celebration starts at 11:30 a.m. Come wish our January birthday members a Happy Day. Make an advance reservation and enjoy the roast beef noon meal, too.
A reminder that the "Facing Race" discussion group begins on Friday, Jan. 25, at 10 a.m. This initiative of the St. Paul Foundation is designed to create more equitable, just and open communities. The DVD presentation offers a fresh approach which, I think, you will find most interesting. Call 736-6842 to register.
The Arthritis Self-Help class sponsored jointly by the Senior Citizens Program and the Arthritis Foundation begins on Monday, Jan. 28, at the Page House at 9 a.m. Call the Senior office to register.
If you have received the necessary material for filing your 2007 Income Tax, it is not too early to make an appointment for free tax assistance. This program starts in February and assistance is available from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays at the Senior Center and from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturdays at the Fergus Falls Public Library. For an appointment, call 736-6842. E-filing will be offered.
For you coffee-drinking gals — I read about an interesting study recently published in "Neurology" which indicates that women age 65 or older who drank more than three cups of coffee every day had less loss over time on memory tests than women who drank one cup or less every day.
Karen Ritchie, Ph.D. of the French Institute for Cognitive Decline says: "Caffiene is a psychostimulent that appears to reduce cognitive decline in women."
Sorry, guys, she adds, "Curiously, caffiene does not have the same benefits for men."

The Daily Journal is happy to host community conversations about news and life in Fergus Falls and the surrounding area. As hosts, we expect guests will show respect for each other. That means we don't threaten or defame each other, and we keep conversations free of personal attacks. Witty is great. Abusive is not. If you think a post violates these standards, don't escalate the situation. Instead, flag the comment to alert us. We'll take action if necessary. It's not hard. This should be a place where people want to read and contribute -- a place for spirited exchanges of opinion. So those who persist with racist, defamatory or abusive postings risk losing the privilege to post at all.Post a comment
