Otters stop Apollo 60-42

Published Saturday, January 26, 2008

Dave Rund’s Fergus Falls Otters cooled down a hot St. Cloud Apollo club Friday night with a 60-42 victory.

The state-ranked Otters improved to 13-4 as they warmed up for a trip to Detroit Lakes Tuesday. The Eagles, who had won six of the seven entering Friday’s contest, fell to 11-7.

The key to beating Apollo was the job the Otters did on their scoring ace, Andrea Hagberg.

Hagberg entered the contest needing just 35 points to become Apollo’s all-time leading basketball scorer. She contributed a respectable 10 points in the first half but was held to just a pair in the second. As a team, the Eagles shot a cool 35 percent.

“We did a better job of identifying where she was in the second half,” said Rund.

Brooke Dunsmoor ended up leading the Eagles with 15 points.

Hannah Draxten had 23 points and nine rebounds to leading the Otters in both departments, Amanda Lewis netted 18 points and Erin Morstad kicked in with 12, The Otters connected on 27 of their 53 floor shots.

The Otter JV team won 47-27 with Mariah Monke scoring 10. The Otter freshmen won 35-21 behind Kelly Hohman’s 11 points.

The Otters were ousted from playoff action last year by Detroit Lakes but defeated the Lakers decisively, 46-26, in a Dec. 15 meeting in Fergus Falls.

The Lakers are 10-6 after losing a 67-64 decision Friday to Crosby-Ironton.
