New laws affect education

Minnesota’s 2008 legislative session revealed $21.7 worth of cuts in the state’s higher education budget.
The Minnesota State Colleges and Universities (MnSCU) system says, despite the drawbacks in funding, it will not hike tuition higher than previously declared for the 2008-09 academic year.
In May, the MnSCU Board of Trustees gave the OK for a two percent increase in tuition for two-year technical colleges.
Rather than looking to students to make up for budget cuts, MnSCU will re-direct $9 million worth of state appropriation funds to make up for funding gaps.
An online measurement tool for colleges and universities launched last month through MnSCU highlights data relating to net tuition in comparison to the rest of the country. Minnesota State Community and Technical College received a “needs attention” rating for tuition.
MnSCU has said that reductions in budget will not diminish funds spent on technology or grants awarded to campuses.
MnSCU is bracing for a $35.5 million reduction in funding scheduled for 2009-10.
