Farmers benefit from warm temps

Published Thursday, July 3, 2008

Warm and dry weather helped the development of crops in Otter Tail County the past week. However, their growth remained below historical averages. Corn crops, in particular, are doing well in many areas of the county.

“Talking with farmers, the corn crop looks pretty good,” said Otter Tail Ag CEO Kelly Longtin.

The report released Monday by the Minnesota field office of the U.S. Department of Agriculture said that, statewide, there were just over six days suitable for field work last week.

As of Sunday, the average corn height in the state was estimated at 20 inches, compared to 33 inches for the five-year average.

It was a similar story for soybeans. The average height for soybeans was six inches compared to 12 inches last year and nine inches for the five-year average.

The report said the average temperature in the state last week was nearly 68 degrees, about half a degree above normal. Statewide topsoil moisture supplies were one percent very short, 13 short, 81 adequate and five surplus.
