Education laws enacted

Published Saturday, July 5, 2008

Laws passed during the 2008 legislative session touched on Minnesota’s early childhood and K-12 education.

Effective July 1, a law providing the equivalent of a one percent increase, or $51 per student, will be added to budgets for Fiscal Year 2009.

As a result, the Fergus Falls School District will see an additional $130,000 for the 2009 fiscal year. The additional funds have been figured into the Fergus Falls School District budget announced at Monday’s school board meeting.

The one percent increase comes from a $10 million decrease in funds allocated to Q Comp, a teacher compensation package that allocates funding to teachers based on their teaching skills and rate of raising student performance.

The General Fund will pick up the additional $33 million necessary for the one percent increase.

• The state has voted to increase reimbursements to schools for each half-pint of milk served to kindergarten students from 14 to 20 cents.

n Wording on ballots for possible school operating levies will change to emphasize that a vote to extend an existing property referendum will occur when the referendum is set to expire, and will not add any additional increases to previous property taxes.
