Paul Schoneman of Wahpeton and his daughter, Becca, 14, relax at their Tipsinah camping site east of Elbow Lake. Also camping was Ali Schoneman, 11.
For Paul Schoneman of Wahpeton and his two daughters, the 51-mile drive to Tipsinah Mounds Park and Campground four miles east of Elbow Lake last week was well worth it. They tented during near-perfect weather and enjoyed horseshoes and other activities.
“This is a great place to camp,” Schoeneman said. “Tipsinah is every bit as good — and more so — than people said it would be.”
Tipsinah Mounds Park and Campground is owned and operated by the City of Elbow Lake. The park and campground are located near Pomme de Terre Lake.
“We take a lot of pride in being stewards of this wonderful park, and we’re happy to open the park and campground for guests,” Elbow Lake Mayor Edward Williams said.
Scott Cleveland, who lives at the site and who is busy as a city employee at Tpsinah, had everything in place early for a successful 2008 camping season. He also made sure the public swimming beach, playground equipment and hiking and nature trails were all ready for the influx of guests.
The city has a public boat launch at Tipsinah, over 25 RV camping sites (electricity and water), tenting sites, a general store and good fishing. For the safety and peace of mind of its guests, Tipsinah has on-premise caretakers and regular police patrols.
Close to the Tipsinah Mounds Park and Campground is the Tipsinah Mounds 18-hole golf course.
“Our Tipsinah brochures convey the beauty of this area east of Elbow Lake,” Mayor Williams said.
Authors of the brochure have done their best to draw visitors from near and far.
“Spacious grounds, whispering leaves, gurgling waters, warming sunrises and quiet sunsets blend with the history of Native Americans,” are some words that lure travelers to Tipsinah. “Come share some time in our part of the world. We promise respite and quality facilities.”
There are things to do for young and old alike at Tipsinah Mounds Park and Campground east of Elbow Lake. Supplies for campers can be purchased right at the park and campground. Guests can obtain bait, ice, gifts, camping supplies and groceries. There’s a dump station and fish cleaning station nearby.
As for things to do, in addition to camping, swimming and golf, there’s volleyball, hay rides, horseshoes, nature trails, basketball, and pet walking areas.
Horseshoes were popular last week for Paul Schoneman of Wahpeton and his daughter, Becca, 14.
