Warm weather boosts crops throughout Otter Tail County

Published Tuesday, July 8, 2008

Warm weather in recent days aided small grains development in Otter Tail County. Statewide, more than half of the crops reached the heading stage.

“Corn is doing well, topping 36 inches in height in many parts of the county,” said Regional Extension Educator Doug Holen.

Corn height in Otter Tail County and across the state still is well below the five-year average of 46 inches. Soybean height in Minnesota last week was estimated at nine inches, compared to 13 inches for the five-year average.

County farmers, last week, had six days suitable for field work. The average temperature statewide for the week was nearly 68 degrees, about a degree below normal.

There are concerns over yellowing of some soybeans in Otter Tail and Becker counties.

“The causes (for the soybean yellowing) are due, in part, to saturated soil conditions,” Holen said.

Statewide topsoil moisture supplies as of Friday were three percent very short, 21 short and 72 percent adequate.
