Bad seeds made stands unfeasible

Published Tuesday, July 15, 2008

It is true that food prices have increased significantly in recent months. However, that fact seems to be a poor excuse for the fact that Bluebird Gardens owners Mark and Diane Boen had to stop their self-service stands due to an increase in theft.

For eight years, the Boens have provided self-service vegetable stands at several locations around Fergus Falls. Because the stands made it very convenient for nearby residents to get fresh locally grown vegetables daily, most paid happily for them, in fact, even more than the price the Boens were asking.

However, starting a couple years ago, those whose intentions were less honorable took advantage of the system. Clearly, over the last year, the “bad seeds” have increased to the point where some self-service stands have been financially unfeasible.

Residents were proud that the Bluebird Gardens honor system worked as long as it did. They should also feel disappointed that, due to a few, it has failed, and because it has, will unlikely be tried again.

What's the point of this??? You already wrote an article about it. We don't need you to tell us "how to feel" about it. Thanks.

AmyO-kind of nit-picky aren't you? Why be so critical of something like this? When someone tells you to have a nice day, do you say, "Don't tell me what kind of day to have!"

Well, maybe you were having a bad day when you wrote this.

Because they already wrote an article about this exact issue. Explaining what had happened and what the outcome had been. Here they have simply summarized the previous article and added "you should all feel disappointed that because of a few people the honor system has failed." I'll tell you how I feel... I feel like a third grader who, because of a few bad kids, the whole class has to stay in from recess. Then after the "non-recess" period the teacher had to sit us all down and explain to us why we didn't get recess that day and that we should all blame those bad few (you know who you are) for our collective punishment. I guess the reason I'm so "nit-picky" is because I'm not in third grade anymore.

Oh, BTW, when someone tells me to have a nice day I say "Thank you, you too." When someone tells me to feel bad or disappointed about something or tells me to have a crappy day I tell them to mind their own business.

i really hope they didn't actually cut down trees to print the same story twice.

I really don't think doing business at the self-serve honor stand helps anyone but the owners. Perhaps the silver lining in this is that several high school students in need of a job and the income will have employment. I for one don't shop at such self serve stands.

Perhaps some of us should stop trying to fool ourselves into thinking that such a business model is workable now or at any time in the past or future.

How many stores put their wares in public without anyone to watch them and manage them? Why don't all the shops in downtown FF leave their doors unlocked, lights on, and merchandise available, with an honor box at the door?

I agree with Amy O. Also, you dont hear the guy down by Service Foods complaining because he has to run his stand everyday..

Nicky, no he's just down at city hall frequently using his influence to build homes next to sewage plants. Great view, but what's that alluring odor?

I've got an idea! Apply to run the newspaper and make it a better read. Do it! Sincerely. At least then you can be critical of something to be critical about. This was the opinion page. If it was redundant, so what?

There are so many other things in this life to complain about. Pick something worthwhile. Make a difference. Third grade? There you go...think about what the third graders will be doing this fall with all the funding cuts.

In the end, I say buy a press. It's a free country. Wait a minute! In the age of computer, start your own newspaper, print it off yourself and make it worth a buck-75. Print something we'd all like to read, AmyO. Change is always good.

Lose weight by getting rid of your junk??? I think I said you should try exercising, but to be honest, I kind of have a hard time following your posts so I'm not exactly sure what "kettle" you're referring to.

BaddaBing - Relax. This is a comments section. It's meant for people to make "comments." If you don't like a comment I have made, that's fine. You are free to have an opinion about my opinion. But don't try to tell me that I should not have or am not entitled to my opinion. Or that it's not my right to voice it. As you so eloquently wrote, it is a free country. Guess you'll just have to learn to deal with it.

"But don't try to tell me that I should not have or am not entitled to my opinion. Or that it's not my right to voice it."

I didn't try and tell you any of that! It wasn't even implied. If you took it like that, I'm sorry. In my own little way, I was telling you to - relax. "Don't sweat the small stuff," and all that rot. In the end, it was my mistake in telling you anything. Comment on, AmyO, comment on.
