Preparations underway for fair

The hard work was just beginning Monday for Jeff Valder and Jessica Levang.
They hauled sheets of plywood, signs, and concession equipment and soon had assembled on the grounds of the West Otter Tail County Fair one of six concession stands owned by concessionaires Doug and Nancy Hansen of Fergus Falls.
By Wednesday Valder and Levang will be selling hundreds of strawberry smoothies, cotton candy and caramel apples. Hansen’s Foods will employ 10-15 people at the West Otter Tail County Fair that runs from Wednesday through Saturday.
“It’s a good day to set up, not too hot and not too cold,” said Valder who resides on the west coast. Levang, a Fergus Falls native who lives in the state of Washington, agreed.
“Being back here in Fergus brings back a lot of great memories,” she said.
Memories at the food stands aren’t in short supply. The Hansens have been selling food at fairs for 33 years now. The business was started by Muggs Townsend, Nancy Hansen’s father.
Food both operators and their workers weren’t the only ones busy Monday afternoon at the county fair site. The midway rides were being assembled, 4-H volunteers were hard at work and various other tasks were being performed by workers throughout the grounds.
From grandstand events such as the Moto-Cross and Demo Derby to a host of carnival rides provided by the Mighty Thomas Carnival, there is something for everyone at this year’s fair.
Parents will again bring youngsters to walk through the children's barn, with other kids taking part in the annual pedal pull.
As in years past, 4-H activities and exhibits will take place this year. Included are exhibits for swine, poultry, horses, beef, sheep, rabbits, dogs, llama, goats and fashion review, to name a few.
There are two entrances to the fairgrounds. One is along Pebble Lake Road and another entrance is located just off of the Minnesota Highway 210 bypass.
From I-94, take Exit 57 and head north toward Fergus Falls and travel approximately 1.5 miles to the fairgrounds entrance, just past the Prairie Wetlands Learning Center.
