The Elbow Lake-based West Central Minnesota Communities Action (WCMCA), a resource agency dedicated to improving the quality of rural life, is sponsoring next week’s Group WorkCamp in Traverse County.
“We’ll have 375 kids from across the country along with 50 local volunteers painting 50 houses, conducting minor repairs (steps, railings, gutters etc.) and building eight wheelchair ramps,” said Stephen Nagle of WCMCA.
Included are 25 projects in Wheaton, 15 in Browns Valley and a dozen or so more in Herman and Dumont.
“The kids will be staying at Wheaton High School and that’s where most of the activity takes place,” Nagle said.
The crews will be on the job sites from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday and Tuesday, July 21-22, 8:30 a.m. to noon on Wednesday, July 23, and 8:30 to 4 p.m. Thursday and Friday, July 24-25. The youths take Wednesday afternoon off for activities and church youth group gatherings. Each evening the group has a program at the high school at 7 p.m.
The camp is expected to help economic activity in Wheaton and in the other communities. Volunteers will be purchasing building supplies at local stores. The exception is Elbow Lake-based WCMCA which has paint donated by the Valspar Corporation.
“Group Workcamps, Inc. contacted West Central Minnesota Communities Action, Inc. (WCMCA) because it wanted the opportunity to bring this service to western Minnesota,” Nagle said. “It fits WCMCA’s mission and provides an opportunity to partner with other community agencies and organizations.”

The Daily Journal is happy to host community conversations about news and life in Fergus Falls and the surrounding area. As hosts, we expect guests will show respect for each other. That means we don't threaten or defame each other, and we keep conversations free of personal attacks. Witty is great. Abusive is not. If you think a post violates these standards, don't escalate the situation. Instead, flag the comment to alert us. We'll take action if necessary. It's not hard. This should be a place where people want to read and contribute -- a place for spirited exchanges of opinion. So those who persist with racist, defamatory or abusive postings risk losing the privilege to post at all.Post a comment
