New display at LRH features Jean Harney

Published Saturday, July 19, 2008

Jean Harney graduated from Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma, Wash., with a major in Education and a minor in Art. Since that time, she has taken art classes in Arizona at A.S.U., Scottsdale Community College, and privately.

Jean has been painting for about 40 years. In the beginning, she painted in oils on canvas or masonite. Several years later she discovered acrylic paints and loved the quick drying properties of them.

Eventually, she switched from painting in acrylics on canvas to painting on paper and gradually worked into painting in watercolor, which is now her medium of choice.

Along the way she learned the print-making form of serigraphy (silk screen) and interchanged that with painting for about 15 years. At one point, she taught serigraphy out of her studio for several years.

"I love the flat look of serigraphy but it is hard physical work and about 12 years ago, I gave it up," she said.

Since 1995, Jean has made numerous trips to France and Italy to paint with friends. These trips have resulted in three successful group shows in the Phoenix, Ariz., area where she lives about eight months of the year.

In the same time frame she's also done a great deal of commission painting in the lakes area of Otter Tail and Becker counties.

Whimsical paintings of everyday life are a favorite subject, especially involving lakes, beaches and fishing. Landscapes, gardens and old buildings also interest her.

Jean spends her summers on Otter Tail Lake and she is an active member of Art of the Lakes Art Association in Battle Lake. Jean's work can be seen in their gallery in Battle Lake and also at the Main Frames Gallery in Perham.

Each summer she participates in the Phelps Mill Festival, the Artist's Studio Tour (also in July) and the Battle Lake Street show held the second Saturday of August.

The Daily Journal is happy to host community conversations about news and life in Fergus Falls and the surrounding area. As hosts, we expect guests will show respect for each other. That means we don't threaten or defame each other, and we keep conversations free of personal attacks. Witty is great. Abusive is not. If you think a post violates these standards, don't escalate the situation. Instead, flag the comment to alert us. We'll take action if necessary. It's not hard. This should be a place where people want to read and contribute -- a place for spirited exchanges of opinion. So those who persist with racist, defamatory or abusive postings risk losing the privilege to post at all.
