Al Hanson to seek 10B legislative seat

Ottertail businessman Al Hanson has filed as a Republican for the state House District 10B seat being vacated by Rep. Dean Simpson of Perham. Hanson is executive director of Lutheran Prison Ministry, a nationwide Bible outreach to prisons and jails across the United States.
Hanson and his family formerly operated The Giant Tire business in Ottertail, selling aircraft and industrial tires to farmers and contractors throughout the Midwest. Hanson sold the landmark building in Ottertail to a local group that plans to restore it.
“I have the time and business experience to represent the citizens of District 10B,” he said. “Legislators continue to play politics with each other, ignoring the needs of folks in outstate Minnesota.”
Hanson said high taxes and the lack of jobs are at the top of his list of concerns for District 10B. The House district territory includes Perham, Parkers Prairie, Sebeca, Wadena, Ottertail, Henning and surrounding townships.
“This is a large district,” Hanson said. “If elected, I will be able to devote the needed time to legislative matters that are vital to our area during this period of economic crisis and recession in the country. My businesses experience and understanding the commodity and financial markets can greatly benefit our district.”
Hanson graduated from Fergus Falls High School and attended Augsburg College, later earning a master’s degree from an accredited Bible College. His wife, Jeanette Van Sickle Hanson, is a graduate of Hillcrest Academy. They have four grown daughters.
Hanson is a member of the VFW, American Legion, Ottertail Lions Club, American Correctional Association and is a past member of the Minneapolis Grain Exchange.
In his role with Lutheran Prison Ministry, he speaks to various groups about prison reform and the subject of prison ministry in the Upper Midwest.
