Tom Lee of rural Elizabeth is running for the District 3 county commission post held by Dennis Mosher. Mosher is retiring from the county board.
Lee will oppose John Lindquist of Dalton and Rick Gronner of Underwood in the Sept. 9 primary election.
Lee is a Humana Health Care sales representative. The company is based in Louisville, Ky.
“Otter Tail County is a terrific place to live,” he said. “We have it all — quality of life, strong economic development and preservation of our historic and natural areas.”
Lee is a Pelican Rapids High School graduate who holds a Bachelor of Science degree from North Dakota State University in Fargo. He was a commissioned officer in the Navy, graduated from Surface Warfare Officers School and served aboard a destroyer as an engineering officer.
He is the son of the late Malcolm Lee, the first Otter Tail County Land and Resource administrator who later served on the county commission.
Lee’s wife Kay is the assistant director of nursing at the Minnesota Veterans Home in Fergus Falls. The couple has two children.
He is chairman of the board of trustees for Lake Region Electric Cooperative Operation Roundup, serves on the board as a director for the Fergus Falls Rifle and Pistol Club, is a junior rifle coach and firearms safety instructor, a member of the Oscar Township Zoning Commission, is past president of West Central Chapter, National Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors and was active in the Boy Scout program.
His hobbies include a wetlands restoration project with his wife near their home while working with the DNR, Soil Conservation Service and others.
“Just for kicks, I started counting all the different species of birds that have visited our wetlands,” he said, “and we’re at 110 now.”
Other hobbies include hunting, fishing and gardening with his wife.
Lee, saying he’d do his best as a county commissioner, added, “I’m just smart enough to know that I don’t have all the answers.”

The Daily Journal is happy to host community conversations about news and life in Fergus Falls and the surrounding area. As hosts, we expect guests will show respect for each other. That means we don't threaten or defame each other, and we keep conversations free of personal attacks. Witty is great. Abusive is not. If you think a post violates these standards, don't escalate the situation. Instead, flag the comment to alert us. We'll take action if necessary. It's not hard. This should be a place where people want to read and contribute -- a place for spirited exchanges of opinion. So those who persist with racist, defamatory or abusive postings risk losing the privilege to post at all.Post a comment
