Quilting camp to be held at FF mall
Published Wednesday, June 4, 2008
Summer camps don’t always involve campfires and mosquitos. The WestRidge Mall is hosting a camp this summer aimed at giving kids a chance to try out their quilting skills.
“We’re trying to give kids an opportunity to learn this art,” said coordinator of the event, Jeannie Anderson. “The goal is to create a fun, learning environment.”
Quilting has recently been thrown into a whole new category. No longer just used as traditional blankets, quilts have come to represent a form of artistic expression.
Quilts glitzed up with various designs and fabrics can be found lining the walls of art galleries throughout the world.
The excitement created by the new art form has inspired quilters in the Fergus Falls area to share their artwork with younger generations.
“We’re trying to get younger people more involved,” Anderson said.
The camp is geared towards kids aged 8 - 14 years old who are already somewhat familiar with the sewing machine but need a little guidance in the quiltmaking process.
The event will take place over the course of three Wednesday afternoons, June 11, 18 and 25 from 1 to 5 p.m., and will help children create a 36 inch table runner. Time and material permitting, children will also have the opportunity to put together a pillow.
Children are encouraged to attend all three classes to get the most out of the camp.
All young sewers must be accompanied by a sewing adult who is able to provide the sewing machine, fabric, sewing tools and a helping hand.
Three experienced quilters will be supervising the three day event.
Anderson hopes that the camp will provide a place for young people with the same interests to mingle and share quilting ideas.
Pre-registration for the camp is required, along with a $25 fee. For more information, call the WestRidge Mall at 218-739-4439 or e-mail jeannieanderson@westridgemallff.com.

The Daily Journal is happy to host community conversations about news and life in Fergus Falls and the surrounding area. As hosts, we expect guests will show respect for each other. That means we don't threaten or defame each other, and we keep conversations free of personal attacks. Witty is great. Abusive is not. If you think a post violates these standards, don't escalate the situation. Instead, flag the comment to alert us. We'll take action if necessary. It's not hard. This should be a place where people want to read and contribute -- a place for spirited exchanges of opinion. So those who persist with racist, defamatory or abusive postings risk losing the privilege to post at all.Posted by cheif (anonymous) on June 4, 2008 at 2:28 p.m. (Suggest removal)
