Reading is ‘cooking’ at the library
Published Thursday, June 5, 2008
Erin Smith
The folks at the Fergus Falls Public Library are cooking up some fun for this summer’s annual reading program.
Erin Smith, the children’s librarian, has incorporated some flavor into this summer’s events, which will run under the slogan, “Look What’s Cookin’ at Your Library.”
Smith said she came up with the idea for this year’s theme after discovering some goofy, yet delicious recipes.
“We will be making food that looks a bit freaky, but taste good,” Smith said.
The summer program hosts a wide variety of activities for children and their families.
Weekly afternoon programs will be offered three times a week from 1 to 1:30 p.m. and will cover topics like honey-making and cake decorating.
“They’re easy, no bake snacks,” Smith said. “It’s something fun for kids to do in the summer.”
Kids attending the Lunch Bunch program can bring their bag lunches to the library every Thursday at noon while they listen to readings from the featured book, The Penderwicks on Gardem Street. Books and Beverages will be provided.
Children who are looking to improve their reading skills over the summer can register for the Read Naturally Program, where kids will work one-on-one with professional reading coaches. Sessions will be offered Monday - Thursdays from 1 - 4 p.m. at the library.
Older students going into grades 4 and up can attend the Accelerated Reading Program, where they will learn from a trained reading specialist and take accelerated reading quizzes to monitor progress.
Storytellers will also put on shows especially designed for family entertainment on Tuesday and Thursdays, starting the last Tuesday in June and wrapping up on July 31.
Preschool and toddler story time sessions will also take place throughout June and July.

The Daily Journal is happy to host community conversations about news and life in Fergus Falls and the surrounding area. As hosts, we expect guests will show respect for each other. That means we don't threaten or defame each other, and we keep conversations free of personal attacks. Witty is great. Abusive is not. If you think a post violates these standards, don't escalate the situation. Instead, flag the comment to alert us. We'll take action if necessary. It's not hard. This should be a place where people want to read and contribute -- a place for spirited exchanges of opinion. So those who persist with racist, defamatory or abusive postings risk losing the privilege to post at all.Posted by justme (anonymous) on June 5, 2008 at 12:16 p.m. (Suggest removal)
Kudos to the library for providing quality summer programs for all area kids, as always. Thank you, Erin, for doing such a great job in the hard-to-fill shoes of Betty Johanson.
