Classic Car Club turns back the clock this weekend

Published Monday, June 9, 2008

It may look like a scene out of an old Happy Days episode this Saturday when members of the Fergus Falls Classic Car and Hot Rod Clubs roll into the Dairyland parking lot for their 22nd annual 50s and 60s car show.

Local car enthusiasts are polishing up their rides and getting ready to rev their engines at the show, which has come to be recognized as a solid local tradition.

“There’s getting to be some history to it,” said organizer of the event, Conley Nygaard. “We get together and have a good time.”

Nygaard expects some 60 cars from the era to fill the Dairyland parking lot.

The event is sponsored by Dairyland owners, Pat and Jean Connelly. Pat took over the business from his father, Chuck, who hosted the first 50s and 60s night in 1986.

“We held on to the tradition of this thing and kept it going,” Nygaard said.

Music from the era will be played over the loud speakers for car owners and visitors to enjoy. Nygaard doesn’t expect riders to doll themselves up in retro outfits, but he will be sporting a 50s and 60s nite t-shirt. T-shirts will be available to purchase at Dairyland this Saturday at the show.

The event is not exclusive to members of the two clubs. Nygaard and his crew encourage locals with classic cars, fixed up or not, to cruise on over to the event, which will begin at 1 p.m. Spectators are also more than welcome to check out the cars and grab a bite to eat.

Nygaard and his crew will head downtown at 5 p.m. for the Summerfest parade. They’ll make their way back to Dairyland after the parade to catch up on some more good times.

The Daily Journal is happy to host community conversations about news and life in Fergus Falls and the surrounding area. As hosts, we expect guests will show respect for each other. That means we don't threaten or defame each other, and we keep conversations free of personal attacks. Witty is great. Abusive is not. If you think a post violates these standards, don't escalate the situation. Instead, flag the comment to alert us. We'll take action if necessary. It's not hard. This should be a place where people want to read and contribute -- a place for spirited exchanges of opinion. So those who persist with racist, defamatory or abusive postings risk losing the privilege to post at all.

I hope these car clubs continue for a long time. Many of us enjoy the nostalgia of the 50's and 60's, and it is great to see how these cars have been restored so beautifully.
