Vandals damage golf course, carts

Published 12:00 p.m., June 9, 2008

Fergus Falls police were called at 6:16 a.m. this morning after vandalism was reported at the Pebble Lake Golf Course south of Fergus Falls.

Golf Course Superintendent Rick Odden, speaking at mid morning, said five privately owned carts were taken from a private storage shed and all five carts sustained damage. Odden and police investigators surmise that the carts, in turn, were used to cause damage to the greens on holes one, 10 and 15. Additionally, Odden reported damage to a walking bridge along fairway No. 15.

“I’ll be heading out again to assess possible other damage to the course,” Odden said. “Our first reports showed damage to the three greens, but there may be other places where we have more damage here at the golf course.

The Fergus Falls Police Department said some damage to the private carts most likely took place when vandals attempted to drive over flags on one or all of the three greens. Some carts where returned to the storage shed area while others were left at various places at the golf course, investigators said.

Just a week ago the front door to the Pebble Lake Golf Course club house sustained approximately $3,000 in damage after someone vandalized the building. Police responded to an alarm at the course around 2:40 a.m.

Police later returned after receiving a report of forced entry into two storage sheds located northeast of the club house. Nothing was reported missing, a week ago, from either shed.

What kind of thrill was this anyway? When these vandals are apprehended, I hope they are given some serious substance abuse counseling, and long probation, etc-wouldn't hurt em to put in some time mowing out there , either!

What the heck is wrong with some people???

I hope the individuals responsible are caught and punished accordingly...not just some stupid fine and a slap on the wrist.

I hope they get caught otherwise this will be another great attraction lost in Fergus Falls. What a shame that these people have to do this and in return the community suffer. Sad very sad.

It looks like alot of people are jealous of the loan the city gave them.

Maybe... our law enforcement officers should start having their coffee breaks at the golf course instead of the church parking lot. either that, or we should loan them some more money to install some good security cameras to catch these fools in action. I'll have to admit, it is an asset worth protecting.

maybe the adults in fergus falls should learn to raise their children to be upstanding law abiding citizens

Maybe the City should contract with the YMCA to provide "nightguard" services at the Golf Course for a couple of months for $20,500.

For all you know, localfisherman, these perps could be the children of those so-called "upstanding citizens" of which you speak, or perhaps not children at all. Whatever the case may be, there is either an increase in acts of vandalism and theft in recent months, or they are being reported more frequently. Either way, it's a bit unsettling.

Or, maybe they aren't even citizens of Fergus Falls in the first place. The possibilities are endless.

Question - When did the City loan money to the course? Was this something recent or a few years ago?
I don't mean to sound completely stupid, but I don't live in the FF area so I don't always read or hear of what is going on. If someone could just fill me in please, thanks.

If these people are caught, someone needs to teach them how to golf. Then they could perfect their swearing and golf club breaking and throwing skills. Anyway, they're doing it all wrong. They need clubs, tees, and golf balls, besides golf carts. Sounds like they've got their breaking and entering skills down though.Doesn't sound like they need any practice there. You're right though "justme", they might not even be from Fergus Falls. From what I've seen, there are idiots like these everywhere these days. Maybe the "perps" are those people who used to hang out at the go-cart place that went under and they're just using golf carts to replace the go-carts they used to drive.Who knows? In any event, this might be a great opportunity to do a charity drive or something like that to raise money to pay for the damages. Heck maybe the city could even chip in. It really is too bad that there seems to be so many people around here who can't think of anything better to do with their time than stealing license plates, burglarizing homes and garages, drinking and driving, making, using and/or selling illegal drugs, stealing from their own place of employement, stealing bikes, lawn mowers and tools, smashing mailboxes and vandalizing and tampering with vehicles. If Fergus only had an outdoor swimming pool.....maybe it would all stop.
