FERGUS FALLS — American Legion Park wasn’t a friendly field when Fergus Falls Post 30 returned home Tuesday for a doubleheader with Moorhead.

After dropping four of five games over the weekend in the Red River Classic, Coach Chris Winter was hoping the friendly confines of home would cure his team’s troubles.

But that wouldn’t be the case Tuesday as Post 30 fell short in both contests.

In game one, Post 30 fell victim to errors that resulted in runs on the board for Moorhead. In game two, pitching was the team’s nemesis as four hurlers were forced to take the mound for Fergus Falls.

In game one Moorhead took a 4-0 lead after five innings but the Post 30 pitchers then shut down Moorhead.

Post 30 added its first run in the bottom of the fifth and added two more runs in the six as Matt Mithaugen, Derek Hansen, and Matt Hanson combined to put Fergus Falls back in the game.

Mithaugen finshed hitting 2-for-3 with one run and a RBI. Hansen went 1-for-2 with a walk, a double and a run, while Hanson went 1-for-3 with a run and a stolen base.

Kyle Shaikoski pitched six innings for Post 30, giving up four runs on five hits. He had five strikeouts, Winter said. Joe Anderson followed in relief, giving up one hit.

“We had a couple of errors that led to a couple of unearned runs,” Winter said. “That was the difference in this game.”

Winter also addressed his team’s early futility at the plate.

“We also need to start putting runs up on the board earlier in games,” he said.

Moorhead jumped all over Post 30 in a 12-6 loss in the second game.

Fergus Falls found itself down 12-2 after four innings before adding four runs late in the game.

“We got down big in the first couple innings and just could never get back into the game,” Winter said.

Troubles on the mound didn’t help Post 30 against Moorhead.

“We sent four different pitchers to the mound in this game,” Winter said.

Pitcher Andy Lee started for Post 30 and took the loss. He gave up seven runs before giving way to Matt Hanson who gave up four runs.

“Alex Kvidt and Nolan Erickson finished off the game strong for us on the mound,” Winter said.

Kvidt and Erickson came in relief and shut down the Moorhead hitters. Kvidt pitched 2 1/3 innings, giving up just a hit. Erickson pitched one inning, closing without giving up a hit.

Behind 12-1 heading into the bottom of the seventh inning, Devin Barker knocked a 3-run homer out of the park but it wasn’t enough to spark Post 30 to a comeback.

Barker ended up going 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBIs. His homerun was his third of the season.

Conner Kerr led Post 30 at the plate, finishing 3-for-4 with two runs and two doubles. Matt Duenow went 1-for-3, adding a run and two RBIs. Jon Anderson went 2-for-4 at the plate.

Game one

Moorhead 102 010 0 4

Fergus Falls 000 012 0 2

Game 2

Moorhead 441 300 0 12

Fergus Falls 200 100 3 6
