School construction closer to reality
Published Wednesday, June 18, 2008
Fergus Falls is one step closer to the construction of a new secondary school. Contractors met with planning officials Tuesday for a pre-bid conference at the Fergus Falls Middle School — the secondary school’s future site.
Contractors were introduced to planning officials from ATS and R and RA Morton, who recorded attendance, reviewed particulars of the project, explained basic contractual obligations and addressed questions among contractors.
Contractors from every aspect of the project were present — from demolition to electrical, carpentry to kitchens, said Site Construction Manager Michael Beach.
Some 200 contractors will bid for spots in one of 50 divisions.
Planning officials walked away from the process with a number of contractors’ questions and are compiling answers in the form of an addendum to be presented to contractors, Beach said.
Bid deadline day for contractors was initially scheduled for June 24, but because officials are working on a large addendum, bid day may be moved to June 26 to allow contractors time to evaluate information and organize applications.
Planning officials will present a preliminary report with recommendations for successful bidders to the school board during their June 30 meeting.
Bidders are judged based on cost, experience, equipment and ability to cover overhead charges. Planning officials also check that contractors possess necessary clerical skills to ensure paperwork is completed accurately.
“They need to be financially solvent,” Beach said. “We make sure that they have certifications, licenses and experience.”
Pre-award interviews are granted to the two lowest bidders with the necessary qualifications.
Many contractors involved in Cleveland construction efforts are bidding for the secondary school project.
Once recommendations are accepted by the school board, which Beach expects to be almost immediately, letters of intent are sent to contractors.
“Then we go to work,” Beach said.
Construction on the secondary school will begin with a groundbreaking ceremony on July 8.

Wait.. you mean to say that the school doesn't have this figured out already? They kicked us out of school early so they could let that building sit empty while nothing is done to it? That's stupid.

The school had to be emptied to prep which must have been a HUGE task! Having moved a number of times I can't imagine a whole school being emptied out! WOW! Good luck! Hope the construction goes well!
