Perham hosts turtle races, more

According to Perham locals, Racing turtles can be a lot of fun. They’re not the quickest creatures out there, but their unpredictability can lead to a pretty interesting match, said Perham Chamber of Commerce office manager, Marica Lubitz.
The town of Perham has become somewhat of a local hub for all things turtles, and the Turtle Fest celebration is testament to its reptilian dedication.
Turtle Fest, which takes place June 18 to 22, provides an array of turtle and non-turtle related activities. The five-day event caters to all ages with activities ranging from a turtle egg hunt to a Friday night street dance.
“It’s a big deal around here. We have a good time doing it. The kids love it,” Lubitz said. “A lot of people plan their vacations around the Turtle Fest.”
Turtles hit the cement for daily races on Wednesday and will continue through until Saturday. Races begin at 10:30 a.m. Registration begins at 10 a.m.
Lubitz said the event draws a diverse crowd, and people of all ages are welcome to coach and race a turtle.
“If you want to race a turtle, you can race a turtle. There are no age limits on it,” Lubitz said.
All turtles raced are found or raised locally, in one of the many area lakes, and are released back into the wild after their entertaining debut.
Participants who coach their turtle to a first, second or third place victory will receive prizes.
Also planned — Helicopter rides given by Northern Lights Aviation will give attendees a chance to view the lakes region from a different perspective. Train rides will be available to those who may prefer to check out the scenery up-close.
Festival-goers will also have the opportunity to browse through craft tents.
Football fans will have a chance to shake the hand of Viktor, the Minnesota Viking mascot. Viktor will make an appearance at the Friday night parade.
Food and refreshments will be available throughout the day. Breakfasts hosted by the Perham Firefighters and Perham Rotary will take place on Saturday and Sunday mornings.
