Three generations of quilters gathered Wednesday at the West Ridge Mall for the first ever quilt camp.

The camp gives kids a chance to learn the art of quilting in a very hands -on way. Although parents, grandparents and volunteers were present to share some tricks of the trade, quilts were primarily constructed by the kids themselves.

“This is something that they’ll have now and for the rest of their life,” said event coordinator, Jeannie Anderson.

Kids worked on sewing machines, provided by their adult supervisors, to make decorative runners. Each runner represented the artist, as was apparent by Kennedy Hartwell’s runner made of horse printed fabric.

“You can be as creative as you want,” Anderson said.

Sarah Carlson was using fabric left over from her brother’s quilt to make the runner. Her runner had a patriotic theme and represented her brother’s service in the Minnesota National Guard.

Campers finished up runners Wednesday and are looking forward to next week when they get the chance to make their very own pillows.

Organizers of the quilt camp are already thinking ahead for future programs. A one-day quilt camp is scheduled for August 20 from 10 a.m. to 4 .m. For more information, contact Jeannie at 739-4439.

The Daily Journal is happy to host community conversations about news and life in Fergus Falls and the surrounding area. As hosts, we expect guests will show respect for each other. That means we don't threaten or defame each other, and we keep conversations free of personal attacks. Witty is great. Abusive is not. If you think a post violates these standards, don't escalate the situation. Instead, flag the comment to alert us. We'll take action if necessary. It's not hard. This should be a place where people want to read and contribute -- a place for spirited exchanges of opinion. So those who persist with racist, defamatory or abusive postings risk losing the privilege to post at all.
