Eerdmans twins fourth at History Day

Published Friday, June 20, 2008

After months of research and preparation, Fergus Falls students, Andy and Billy Eerdmans made an appearance this month at the National History Day Competitions in Maryland. And they walked away with their heads held high.

The boys took fourth place for the junior group exhibit division for their exhibit on the development of the western U.S.-Canadian border, titled 54-40 or Flight.

The competitions involved students in grades six through 12 who presented research papers, exhibits, documentaries, performances and Web sites that attempt to portray a significant historical event in relation to the competitions theme.

Themes change year to year.

The theme for this year’s competitions was Conflict and Compromise.

Exhibits were judged on accuracy, historical relevance to the theme and the portrayal of the event’s significance before and after its occurrence.

The boys placed first in the junior exhibition state competition in April, which secured their spot in the national competition.

Minnesota students made up 52 of the 2500 overall contestants.

And although this year’s national competition has come to an end, it won’t be the last time the two take a shot at a national title.

Andy and Billy are entering ninth grade in the fall this year and have no plans to give up.

The Daily Journal is happy to host community conversations about news and life in Fergus Falls and the surrounding area. As hosts, we expect guests will show respect for each other. That means we don't threaten or defame each other, and we keep conversations free of personal attacks. Witty is great. Abusive is not. If you think a post violates these standards, don't escalate the situation. Instead, flag the comment to alert us. We'll take action if necessary. It's not hard. This should be a place where people want to read and contribute -- a place for spirited exchanges of opinion. So those who persist with racist, defamatory or abusive postings risk losing the privilege to post at all.
