Walk of Flags number on hold for now
Another trailer and additional volunteers needed
Published Monday, June 30, 2008
What began as placement of 101 flags at Veterans Park in Fergus Falls in 2002, has increased to 1,417 flags positioned for holidays throughout the year. However, flag positioning will be put on hold when the number reaches 1,440.
“We’re in need of a new trailer to store and transport the flags and we also need more, and younger, volunteers,” said veteran Bert Hoffman, a volunteer with Veterans Walk of Flags, Inc.
Flags, stored near the VFW, can be purchased in honor of any military veteran, living or dead. The cost is $75 and includes installation of a flag base that’s numbered so that relatives and friends can see the flag (during holidays) with the veteran’s name positioned on the flag pole.
“Our volunteers, mostly veterans, are getting older and we need more help,” Hoffman said. “Also, it takes a lot of space to transport the flags.”
Veterans Walk of Flags, Inc., currently has three cargo storage trailers and needs a fourth.
The last trailer that was purchased cost close to $6,000. The last two trailers were funded by organizations and businesses in Fergus Falls.
Policies for Veterans Walk of Flags, Inc., are established through a board of directors.

The Daily Journal is happy to host community conversations about news and life in Fergus Falls and the surrounding area. As hosts, we expect guests will show respect for each other. That means we don't threaten or defame each other, and we keep conversations free of personal attacks. Witty is great. Abusive is not. If you think a post violates these standards, don't escalate the situation. Instead, flag the comment to alert us. We'll take action if necessary. It's not hard. This should be a place where people want to read and contribute -- a place for spirited exchanges of opinion. So those who persist with racist, defamatory or abusive postings risk losing the privilege to post at all.Posted by bucksteel (anonymous) on June 30, 2008 at 1:02 p.m. (Suggest removal)
I have to say that the Walk of Flags is pretty impressive on the 4-5 days each year that they are up. However, the 1,417 pieces of concrete in the grassy areas look pretty tacky when there are no flags in them.

Anyone have a solution? Paint the concrete green so it doesn't stand out as much? I've seen green concrete in other places around the country where they put up flags similar to what Fergus does every year.
