Free tax assistance continues at the Senior Center through the Tax Counseling for the Elderly program. Appointments are still available by calling 736-6842.

What else happens in March? I'm sure our champion spellers can tell you. It's the Annual Senior Citizens Spelling Bee at the Senior Center. This year the date is Monday, March 31, and the time is 1 p.m.

If you wish to get an early start on your personal practice sessions, you may pick up a list of words in the senior office. It's a friendly competition but there will be prizes. Dolores Saurer and Shirley Dowzak will host the event. Please register in the office if you plan to participate.

Next Wednesday, March 5, at 11:30 a.m., a "Frail and Elderly Services" seminar will be presented by Janet Koep from West Central Communities Action, Inc. She will discuss programs that are available through this agency including home modifications.

Moving into the following week, we have John Armstrong again visiting the Center on Wednesday, the 12th, at 11:30 a.m., for a free ear wax check and hearing aid cleaning. This is by appointment (736-6842).

The following day, it's breakfast at Debbie's Kitchen at 9:30 for the Red Hat ladies. Please register in the senior office if you plan to attend. These are gals who insist that although aging is inevitable, "getting old" is optional and, above all, fun is manditory.

We are fortunate in having Attorney Jamison (Jay) Cichosz visit the Senior Center each month to provide a free consulation to members having a legal question pertaining to wills, trusts, estate planning and elder law. This month he will be at the Center on Wednesday afternoon, March 26. Call 736-6842 for an appointment.

Thanks to everyone who participated in the "Facing Race" discussion group. We've decided to continue the group with the next sessions focusing on current events. We'll be meeting at 10 a.m. on Friday mornings through March.

There is no fee to attend but registration is requested (736-6842). Roseann and I will be there too and we look forward to seeing you for some lively discussions.

The Daily Journal is happy to host community conversations about news and life in Fergus Falls and the surrounding area. As hosts, we expect guests will show respect for each other. That means we don't threaten or defame each other, and we keep conversations free of personal attacks. Witty is great. Abusive is not. If you think a post violates these standards, don't escalate the situation. Instead, flag the comment to alert us. We'll take action if necessary. It's not hard. This should be a place where people want to read and contribute -- a place for spirited exchanges of opinion. So those who persist with racist, defamatory or abusive postings risk losing the privilege to post at all.
