Sham Rock ‘n Roll Monday

Published Friday, March 14, 2008

By making a purchase at the Sham Rock and Roll auction for the Muscular Dystrophy Association Monday, you are helping your friends and neighbors.

“The money raised in Fergus Falls stays local and serves families there,” said Laura Hochsprung, district director of the Fargo MDA office. “It provides families with flu shots and funding for wheelchairs, leg braces” and more. The Fargo office serves 400 families in the North Dakota and northwest Minnesota area, including Fergus Falls.

With more than 100 items on the block, bidding for the 17th Annual Sham Rock and Roll auction gets underway at 6 p.m. at the Fergus Falls Eagles. Leading the bidding will be Cary Aasness of Aasness Auctioneers. Admission is free.

“It’s an amazing feeling to witness the generosity of local businesses,” said Susan Kay, events coordinator for Lakes Radio, which sponsors the auction. “Nearly 100 businesses from our area alone have donated to the auction this year.”

Some of the items up for bid include four lower reserved Minnesota Twins 2008 game tickets; an autographed 8x10 Glossy photo of Minnesota Vikings player Kevin Williams; NASCAR collectibles; FM Redhawk tickets; autographed Twins baseballs and a hat; many $25, $10 and $5 food certificates from local merchants; a bird bath; John Deere 28-inch wagon, auto car starter; oil changes; collectibles and more.

Everyone wearing a Sham Rock and Roll button receives a door prize; drawings for these prizes — such as $50 in gold coins — will take place during the auction. Buttons are still available for $5 at Lakes Radio. Many buttons have already been sold, thanks to Fergus Falls High School students, who sold them to help their classmate, Justin Fiedler.

“We are so very proud of the students at the Fergus Falls High School for volunteering to sell the Sham Rock n Roll buttons and doing so in such a huge way,” Kay said.

Auction donations will be accepted until 2 p.m. Monday. For more information, call Kay, 736-7596.

The Daily Journal is happy to host community conversations about news and life in Fergus Falls and the surrounding area. As hosts, we expect guests will show respect for each other. That means we don't threaten or defame each other, and we keep conversations free of personal attacks. Witty is great. Abusive is not. If you think a post violates these standards, don't escalate the situation. Instead, flag the comment to alert us. We'll take action if necessary. It's not hard. This should be a place where people want to read and contribute -- a place for spirited exchanges of opinion. So those who persist with racist, defamatory or abusive postings risk losing the privilege to post at all.
