Hillcrest Academy’s Cody Aasness makes a move to the basket Saturday in Morris.

After Saturday night’s victory over Wheaton-Herman-Norcross, fans of Comet basketball say they’re ready for more.

Junior Kirsten Miller was among the Hillcrest students who took a school-organized fan bus to Saturday’s game at the University of Minnesota, Morris. There the Comets topped Wheaton 70-55, the first time Hillcrest’s claimed the South Sub-Section 6A championship since 2002.

“When we played Wheaton during our regular season, we played really well the first half and started going downhill the second half,” Miller said, “so I think it was kind of an upset that we won. Everyone’s really pumped for the game tomorrow and excited that we made it this far.”

Tuesday’s section championship is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at Concordia College in Moorhead, where the Comets will take on North champ Norman County East.

Among the Hillcrest fans will be the school’s international students, many of whom come from countries where basketball is less popular. Juniors Martha Brunstad and Marit Skogestad hail from Norway and say it’s exciting to be in an environment where basketball has a following.

“It’s a big deal and it’s very fun,” Skogestad said.

“People really want to support the team,” Brunstad added.

Those people include more than students. Parents, staff and community members have also added to Hillcrest’s fan base.

“Like we’ve been saying all year, we think our fans are the best in the conference,” said senior guard Joey Pattillo.

“After Saturday night’s win, we just enjoyed it, and today will be a day of preparation for Norman County East,” said head coach Gregg Preston.

“Our schedule was really ideal that way. Sunday they had a day to rest and heal any soreness,” with a light run-through scheduled for Monday, he said.

In other basketball news, Pelican Rapids will face Crosby-Ironton at Bemidji State University Tuesday for the Section 8AA boys championship. The Vikings make the trip after a 69-54 Victory over East Grand Forks at Concordia Friday. Tuesday’s game is scheduled for 7 p.m.
