Duncan uncovers area history

Dolores Duncan has family roots to Otter Tail County on both her mother’s and father’s side. For this, and other reasons, she knows how much genealogy means to former residents and those who want to find more about family members who once lived in this county.

As a volunteer with the Otter Tail County Historical Society, her main focus at the county museum is genealogy.

“People are very appreciative when we help them out,” she said, “and this is an enjoyable way for me to fill some extra time in my life.”

Those wishing for genealogy assistance can fill out an application – with as much as they know about their family history – on a form provided on the county museum Web site. Then volunteers such as Duncan volunteer their time to track down the information. Since genealogy access costs money, each applicant pays $20. That money goes into the genealogy research program at the historical society.

“People understand that, even with volunteers, there are costs involved with using equipment, databases and you name it,” Duncan said. “People are very happy when we provide the family history information they’re looking for. I’ve personally received thanks from people in many states, and even from some overseas such as a man from Norway who has ties to Otter Tail County.”

She’s had genealogy as her volunteer focus at the museum for several years. Duncan herself has family ties to Eagle Lake Township. She plans to volunteer as long as her health permits.

“Dolores is one of my favorite people. She always does a great job and is a dedicated volunteer,” said Vicky Anderson, research assistant at the museum.

Duncan had a dairy operation with her late husband, Charles. She has four grown children.

Over the years she also has volunteered at Federated Church, Lake Region Hospital, homemakers’ club and for the 4-H youth organization.
