Spartans young, talented this season

Published Thursday, March 27, 2008

The Minnesota State CTC Spartans have a young but talented team for their run at state and region honors this spring.

Kent Bothwell’s baseball club will be anchored by seven veterans.

Mike Gronseth was 6-1 as a freshman. He will be joined on the staff by veterans Jake Leuschke, who will also DH, and Corey Quackenbush, who will see duty in the outfield when he is not on the hill.

Returning position players include centerfielder Jake Erickson, infielder Matt Schornack, outfielder Bryan Rocheleau and infielder-pitcher Mac Grunig.

The club’s top freshmen, a class that Bothwell rates very high, includes pitcher-infielder Justin Olson, pitcher Chris Doege, pitcher-infielder Jamie Jacklitch, pitcher-infielder Paul Preimesberger, pitcher Nathan Nowak, infielders Cody Curry and Shan Jore and catcher Joe Copas.

“We are young at a number of key positions, yet talented,” said Bothwell. “The pitching staff is strong with some depth. We have good speed and the potential to be good offensively.

Bothwell expects his club to challenge for both the state and the region championships. The Spartans placed fourth in the state tournament last year and qualified for the region where they lost a pair of 2-1 squeakers. The club finished with a record of 16-14.

The Spartans are scheduled to play Riverland Friday at 10 a.m. in the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome. The Spartans are currently 1-8 after a trip to Florida.
