Dalton water project to begin in summer

Published Monday, March 31, 2008

Dalton’s water project, following approval of a $500,000 Small Cities Development Program (SCDP) grant, will get underway in June or July. Project work will be the responsibility of Ulteig Engineers, Detroit Lakes.

The grant allows for building two new wells, construction of a water treatment facility and for work on water mains (distribution).

“We’ll likely have two contractors, after the public bid process, for the construction projects,” said Bob Schlieman, project manager for Ulteig Engineers.

Schlieman said that one contractor would likely work on the water main project. A second contractor would likely build the two new wells and construct the water treatment facility.

Concerns over arsenic levels in the water supply resulted in city leaders becoming proactive in making necessary changes and additions with wells, Dalton’s water treatment facility and water mains.

The SCDP encourages community development in rural Minnesota. Funding from the program is used to rehabilitate buildings and improve the public infrastructure.

The Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development administers the Community Development Block Grant program for Greater Minnesota through the SCDP.
