Otters have elite player

Magnusson earns spot on state’s U17 squad

Published Thursday, May 1, 2008

Erika Magnusson will be skating in New York this summer after being picked for an elite Minnesota hockey squad.

The Fergus Falls defenseman was nominated to join 360 other juniors for a series of tryouts following the 2007-08 prep season.

Magnusson made all three cuts and while the suspense did not do her any good, the kick she has gotten from making the team has been great.

“It’s really exciting to know that everything I have worked for has paid off,” said Magnusson. “I am proud to be playing with some of the best girls in the nation and the state.”

The Minnesota team, which is the largest from any state, will travel to Lake Placid, N.Y. for a national festival camp June 25-July 1. The team that emerges from that week of hockey will be USA Hockey’s U17 club and will represent the United States in international competition. Some 85 players from 12 districts around the United States will compete on five teams at Lake Placid. Magnusson will be one of 30 defensemen.

“Erika is a very dedicated player,” said Fergus Falls hockey coach Brian Vatnsdal. “She works very, very hard. She knows what she wants and she goes after it.”

Magnusson is one of five defensemen on the Minnesota team. The other defensemen are Anoka’s Janessa Haller, Crookston’s Erika Wheelhouse, St. Louis Park’s Lisa Martinson and Kelsey Romatoski of the Academy of Holy Angels.
