Area high school seniors are one step closer to becoming college freshmen. The Dollars for Scholars foundation luncheon, held at MSCTC’s Legacy Hall on Wednesday, awarded 56 students from Fergus Falls High School and Hillcrest Lutheran Academy with $43,688 in scholarship funds.
Two new technical and vocational scholarships were added this year. The Ottertail Builders and Lloyd and Beverly Paulson scholarships were awarded to four students who plan on pursuing two-year degrees with community and technical colleges.
“It was more to touch the lives of students not looking for traditional four-year degrees.” said Foundation President, Dave Schneeberger.
Scholarship recipients are chosen by a selection committee in early March. Applicants are judged based on their academic standing and study of interest. Student names are not revealed to the selection committee until final decisions are made.
The foundation began awarding scholarships to students in 1991. Throughout the years, they have provided 470 students with $322,000.
Scholarship funds are contributed by individuals, memorials, area businesses and organizations. Scholarships awarded each year are derived from the previous year’s accrued interest.
