Pastor moving on to Lakeland

Grace United Methodist Pastor Darren Flinck is saying his good-byes to Fergus Falls parishioners. Flinck, who has served the community for the past eight years, is moving on to St. Croix Valley United Methodist Church in Lakeland at the end of June.
Flinck learned of his relocation in February. The decision, made by a cabinet of pastors and one bishop, did not come as a surprise for Flinck. He and his wife had informed the council that, if necessary, they were willing to relocate within Minnesota, preferably closer to their family.
“We knew coming here that this would not be our last place of appointment,” Flinck said. “It’s just another chapter; another journey.”
Before his move to Fergus Falls, Flinck served at a parish in Vernon Center, Minnesota. It was there that he and his wife raised their children. Flinck described the move to Fergus Falls as a “reverse empty nest,” as it was he and his wife that left the community after their childrens’ graduation.
Although Flinck is optimistic about things to come, he admits it will not be easy to leave the cozy community he and his wife have grown to love.
“It’s a hard thing to do because you do connect with people outside of the church,” Flinck said.
Flinck and members of his parish formed a softball team six years ago. Many memories for Flinck were created on the softball diamond, where he enjoyed the camaraderie and commitment of his friends and teammates.
He also joyfully reflects on the support and encouragement he received from the church while he was attaining his Doctors of Ministry degree.
“The congregation’s support during that three years was terrific,” he said.
During his time in Fergus Falls, Flinck has had the unique opportunity of learning from the many other leaders of faith within the town.
“I think that Fergus Falls is an intriguing community because there are so many churches in this area,” he said.
Flinck has invited the new pastor, Robert Kandels, to the church and is in the process of transitioning him into the role. Flinck said it’s an exciting time for the congregation, and he’s optimistic that Kandels will fit right in.
Flinck’s will say his final farewells on June 22. He hopes to keep in touch with the Fergus Falls congregation and will reflect joyfully on his time spent with each and every member of the church.
