Two Overnight Fires in FF

Published Friday, May 2, 2008

The Fergus Falls Fire Department responded to two area fires late Thursday and early today.

The first occurred just after 10 p.m. Thursday, when firefighters were called to a trailer home blaze in Green Acres Trailer Park.

The home was vacant at the time, Fire Chief Mark Hovland said, and firefighters spent roughly two hours at the scene before the fire was extinguished.

The fire destroyed one end of the home.

Hovland said authorities are attributing the fire to arson, though he would not release further details and said the incident is under investigation.

Firefighters responded to a second blaze at about 5 a.m. today at 110 East Adolphus, a property owned by Mark and Susan Adelsman. Renter Tony Welch woke up to find the house filled with smoke, Hovland said, and called the fire department after leaving the building.

The fire started in the main electrical panel in the basement and traveled up the walls, Hovland said.

The home sustained moderate smoke damage and fire fighters had to cut a hole in the floor of the one-story building to put out the blaze. If the fire had spread to the attic, the home would likely have been totaled, Hovland said.

Luckier yet is the fact that Welch sustained no injuries, he said.

“I’m glad that this guy woke up because the smoke detector wasn’t working,” Hovland said.

The Daily Journal is happy to host community conversations about news and life in Fergus Falls and the surrounding area. As hosts, we expect guests will show respect for each other. That means we don't threaten or defame each other, and we keep conversations free of personal attacks. Witty is great. Abusive is not. If anyone hears or knows anything about the trailor home fire please call the Police or Fire Dept.
Many good people risked their safety to protect adjacent homes.

Smoke detectors are supposed to be checked & batteries changed twice a year. After daylight savings time change and in the fall with central standard time. I just put in combo smoke alarm/carbon monoxide detectors when we moved into our townhouse. Good job Tony! Didn't panic, and remembered to call fire dept after exiting.
