Published Sunday, May 4, 2008

SAUK RAPIDS — The Minnesota State CTC Lady Spartans placed third in the state tournament Sunday to earn a spot in the upcoming Region 13A fastpitch tournament at Willmar.

By winning three of their five games, the Lady Spartans completed a grueling slate of 15 games over seven days.

Lloyd Danzeisen’s club will now take a 13-12 season record into region play Friday against Madison (Wis.) Area Tech. The winner of their 1 p.m. game will tangle with Ridgewater. The region championship will be decided Saturday.

"I was extremely proud of them," said Danzeisen, following Sunday’s state tournament action. "We played 15 games in the last seven days and for them to play as well as they did, and as hard as they did, really took a great effort and toughness."

The Lady Spartans opened the state tournament by falling to eventual state champ Central Lakes 3-1. Olivia Graham fanned seven and walked only one in giving the Raiders the victory. Erin Evavold and Claire Parks both had two hits. Sam Woida scored MSCTC’s only run on a passed ball.

Evavold went 4-for-4 while Parks and Brittany Quistorff combined for five hits and four RBIs as MSCTC whipped Rochester 11-3 in five innings.

The hot-hitting Lady Spartans then pounded out 17 hits in beating Rainy River 10-5 in nine innings.

Nikki Kneisl went 5-6 with three runs and two RBIs. Woida, Evavold and Laura McCarthy combined for nine hits and seven ribbies.

Cassandra Klimek and Laura McCarthy combined for six hits and three RBIs as the Lady Spartans opened Sunday’s play by topping Riverland 9-6.

The Lady Spartans were gunning for their fourth straight victory Sunday against Ridgewater but Heather Thoma’s one-hitter and nine unearned runs in the third led to a 9-0 defeat. Melissa Walvatne for MSCTC’s only hit off Thoma, who fanned three and did not walk a batter in a five-inning game.

Evavold chalked up all three pitching victories for the Lady Spartans.

Central Lakes edged Ridgewater 2-1 for the state title.
