Comets settle for split with Owls

Published Tuesday, May 6, 2008

Nick Tungseth tossed a three-hit beauty Monday to help the Hillcrest Comets gain a split with Hancock.

Tungseth fanned 10 and did not allow an earned run as the Comets edged the Owls 2-1 in the opener.

“Nick was outstanding tonight,” said Hillcrest head coach Scott Undseth. “He had total command of his pitches and we needed that because our bats were silent all night long.”

Tungseth’s sacrifice fly brought in Tim Borowski and give Hillcrest a 1-0 lead in the third. After Hancock tied the game in the top of the fifth, the Comets pushed the winning run across as Ethan Wentzel reached on an error and scored on a base hit by Dan Tungseth.

Austin Schmidgall and Derrick Foss combined for four hits and three RBIs as the Owls won the second game 6-4.

Foss fanned 12 and scattered five Hillcrest hits in Game 2.

Tim Erickson doubled in Tungseth twice for the Comets. Nolan Erickson and Jamie Stedjan both singled in runs.

The Comets will host CGB Friday in a 5 p.m. game.
