Council approves golf club loan

Published Tuesday, May 6, 2008

The Fergus Falls city council on Monday approved a loan of up to $175,000 for equipment purchases by the Pebble Lake Golf Club. When the loan was first introduced at a committee meeting last week, the intent was to forgive the loan over the next five years, incorporating it into the city’s budget. As Finance Director Bill Sonmor explained, the loan would help the club afford much-needed equipment and require the golf board to come up with a five-year plan for achieving sustainability.

But despite Monday’s approval, some council members said loan deferment may be the better option. Rick Wilson said he’d like to meet with members of the golf board as it develops its improvement plan.

“I just need to have some assurance that this is going to get turned around,” he said.

A representative of the club in attendance at Monday’s meeting said the board would be happy to sit down with the council and discuss its plans.

The Daily Journal is happy to host community conversations about news and life in Fergus Falls and the surrounding area. As hosts, we expect guests will show respect for each other. That means we don't threaten or defame each other, and we keep conversations free of personal attacks. Witty is great. Abusive is not. If you think a post violates these standards, don't escalate the situation. Instead, flag the comment to alert us. We'll take action if necessary. It's not hard. This should be a place where people want to read and contribute -- a place for spirited exchanges of opinion. So those who persist with racist, defamatory or abusive postings risk losing the privilege to post at all.

nice very nice for the elite few to have their cake and eat it too...I know they pay more in taxes but when is enough -enough! How about those lifegaurds. How about having a decent dining experiece at the course with all their screwed up hours and closing at whim maybe PUTTERS should be putting in more money, oh wait do they put anything in at all?

Maybe you should have gone to the City Council meeting last night and expressed your views.

Justgettingby, could have gone to the city council meeting and talked until he was blue in the face. It would not have done any good, the fix was in on this giveaway long before the city council meeting. This is just more of the elites taking care of the elites with taxpayer money. Welfare for the rich.

I used to feel the same way ol whats his name feels. But then I got off my butt, scratched around, worked hard, skipped vacations and eventually, after participating in elections and public projects I became......(drum roll) a member of the elite! You whiners make me puke. Whats wrong with boosting your community a little bit.
Believe me, very little is done in small communities that is absolutely OPPOSED my a majority of the community. This action was taken because the POSITIVE forces in the community outweigh the NEGATIVE whiners.
Grow up little man.

I understand what the course is going through, i own a local business and we are going through very hard times, along with many other businesses in the area. You don't see the city bailing us out. We have a non-existent mall and dieing downtown that could use that money more than the golf course. Golf is for the most part an elitest sport for the upper crust, and as usual the government is helping them out. Again i feel for the owners, but bailing them out in not the answer.

Newshound, I guess you are a member of the elite. Like most elitists you feel that anyone not like you or like “ol what’s his name” must be lazy and taking too many vacations. After all, if they were not lazy they would be elitists like you, right? I guess it’s fairly easy to be positive when the taxpayers fund your leisure activities.
