Enjoy lakes this weekend

With the fishing opener only days away and lake property owners once again returning to the area, it was good to see that the Otter Tail Coalition of Lakes Associations has renewed its commitment to voluntary water testing.
The clarity of Otter Tail County’s lakes is a prime reason why people live and to spend their vacations on them. And it is vitally important that we maintain that clarity.
With volunteers monitoring more than 350 lakes in the county, negative changes in clarity can be observed quickly, and the COLA can take action on a particular lake to reverse the trend.
In addition to testing, lakeshore property owners can also be good stewards by following the rules and guidelines set by the county’s shoreland management office and Minnesota Department of Natural Resources. Policies such as using phosphorus-free fertilizer on your lawn, leaving unmowed buffer strips near the shore, and removing all aquatic plants from your boat, motor and trailer and dispose of them where there is no danger of a new colony starting can help maintain water clarity.
Let’s enjoy our lakes, but let’s make sure future generations enjoy them as well.

The Daily Journal is happy to host community conversations about news and life in Fergus Falls and the surrounding area. As hosts, we expect guests will show respect for each other. That means we don't threaten or defame each other, and we keep conversations free of personal attacks. Witty is great. Abusive is not. If you think a post violates these standards, don't escalate the situation. Instead, flag the comment to alert us. We'll take action if necessary. It's not hard. This should be a place where people want to read and contribute -- a place for spirited exchanges of opinion. So those who persist with racist, defamatory or abusive postings risk losing the privilege to post at all.Post a comment
