Fergus nine gains split with Eagles

The Fergus Falls Otters racked up their first victory of the season Tuesday by splitting a twinbill with St. Cloud Apollo.
Apollo erased a 3-2 Fergus Falls lead with a five-run seventh to win the opener 7-3.
Mike Frericks fanned nine and walked two for Apollo. Nick Johnson was hung with the loss.
Jake Heck had two of Fergus’ four hits off Frericks. Andrew Anderson drove in two runs.
Logan Briese came up with a two-run single in the top of the seventh as the Otters rallied past Apollo 4-3 in the nightcap.
Matt Duenow reached on an error and Matt Mithaugen walked to set up Briese’s one-out rap.
Kyle Shaikoski fanned seven and notched the win. Heck came on in the eighth to gain the save.
Steve Theis hit a solo homer for Apollo.
“It’s been a long time,” said Fergus Falls head coach Mark Aho, who the Otters win for the first time since the 2006 season. “It’s always nice to get a win.”
The Otters will host Brainerd Thursday in a Central Lakes Conference doubleheader.

PERHAM — A hustling young Staples-Motley baseball squad took a pair from Hans Hanson’s Yellowjackets in a Mid-State doubleheader.
Nick Stoll’s RBI single accounted for Perham’s lone run in the opener.
Trevor Ness and Jordan Riewer both went 2-for-3 in the victory.
Mac Stoll had a good outing for Perham recording 11 strikeouts.
Ness went 3-for-4 and drove in three runs as the Cardinals completed their sweep.
Stoll, Sam Meyer and Marcus Hendrickson came up with Perham’s three hits.
Reliever Alex Jansson notched the win while Perham starter Nathan Schmitz took the loss.
“We just didn’t hit very well today,” Perham head coach Hans Hanson said.
“Give Staples credit, they totally outplayed us.”
The Yellowjackets are now 1-6 heading into a doubleheader Saturday with Park Rapids.

HAWLEY — Joran Clute hurled a four-hit shutout as the Nuggets topped the Vikings in a Heart O’ Lakes Conference showdown.
Andy Ulven led the Nuggets with two hits. Brian Guler collected a pair of hits for the Vikings.
The Vikings are slated to host West Central Area Friday.
