FF golfers shine in Otter Invitational

Published Wednesday, May 7, 2008

Mike Tuel shot a two-under-par 70 for medalist honors Wednesday and the busy Fergus Falls Otters won the Otter Invitational with a dazzling 296.

Tuel’s teammate, Trevor Gervais, was one under with a 71.

Allen Sellner and Lucas Gervais were also impressive on their home course with rounds of 77 and 78. Nick Risbrudt came up with an 80 and Derek Smith carded an 83.

“We have been looking for the fourth quality score all year and today we got it,” said Sellner. “That fourth score makes a huge difference in our team total.”

The Otters, who were playing their third tournament in three days, dropping 23 strokes off Tuesday’s finish at Little Falls. They needed their good round with Alexandria and Moorhead coming in at 303 and 305.

The Fergus Falls B-team also had three golfers shooting in the 70s. Mitch Thorsen carded a 77, Taylor Gray shot a 78 and Taylor Shuck fired a 79. Seth Johnson (80), Conner Lausch (82), Sam Salwei (93) and Nick Kangas (97) rounded out the group.

“The scores the guys shot on both Otter teams shows the hard work everyone is putting into their game,” said Gervais. “We have been looking for more depth the past few years and it looks like we are on our way to achieving it.”

The Otters were joined by 14 teams on the warm, sunny spring day.

Rounding out the field were St. Cloud Tech (315), Brainerd (316), Sauk Rapids (324), Rocori (329), Sartell (330), Willmar (332), Fargo South (334), Crookston (339), Park Christian (342), Little Falls (344) and St. Cloud Apollo (368).
