Battle Lake group offers to buy church building

On May 18 the congregation of First Lutheran Church, Battle Lake, which is constructing a new church on the southwest side of town, will vote on an offer to sell the current church building to a foundation that hopes to use the old facility as the Lakes Area Community Center.
“Sale of the current church parking lot to the City of Battle Lake is a separate issue,” said Rob McNair, church secretary. “The city council has a proposal in mind concerning the parking lot.”
Construction is on target for the new church. Completion is scheduled by mid-summer.
“It will be exciting when the transition is finalized,” said Lakes Area Community Center representative and foundation member Linda Tikanen. “We have lots of plans, and of course some fundraising to do.”
Tikanen said that this summer Lakes Area volunteers will hold events each Thursday at 8 p.m., with those events held in the old church.
Tikanen said that the new Lakes Area Community Center, and related activities, will complement the many other activities in Battle Lake that take place during the year.
On its Web site, Battle Lake promotes itself as The "Little City with a Big Heart." With a population of 797, the number of people increases during the summer months in light of the town’s proximity to nearby lakes. That’s when foundation members foresee especially good use of the proposed Lakes Area Community Center.
Web site authors further state, “ From summer cabins to lake homes, fall festivals to fish fries, parades to parks, arts and craft shows to floral, gifts, ice cream, coffee and tea shops, walleye tournaments to turtle races, Battle Lake has something to offer everyone of every age.”
Foundation members such as Tikanen agree, and want to complement those community-wide efforts.
